I Hate Doing This

Every time someone comments on this blog I receive an email notice of the comment.  It's an optional feature of Blogger, but it's nice to know when there has been a new comment so I can reply if I feel like it.  Recently, for whatever reason, I have been inundated with emails (sometimes up to 15-20 a day) telling me of a new comment.  They're all fake.  By fake I mean that the comment that appears in the email often makes no sense, is grammatically incorrect, often in a foreign language and always, always contains a link.

I know they're bullshit because the email references the post on the blog to which the comment was ostensibly written, many of them from several years ago.  When I look up the old post the comment doesn't actually appear.  So Blogger has some glitch that is letting spam email come through claiming there are comments on my blog.

I know that several of those that comment here have blogs of their own and they all use some type of screening device that weeds out non-humans.  Operating on the assumption that the funky emails are generated by some type of bot in the Eastern Bloc or Nigeria, I'm going to start using a screening device on Monday.  I hate them, they are often unreadable on the first try, but I'm hoping it filters out the unwanted emails.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but it seems a small price to pay for all the knowledge and entertainment you get here.
