In the wake of the tragic school shooting in Newton, CT, the NRA released a statement of condolence and then announced a news conference for Dec. 21. In the past, when there was a mass shooting, it had been the pattern of the NRA to issue such a statement followed within a few days by another statement saying now was not the time to discuss policy. They were content to lay low, realizing that the public would soon move on to other issues and there would be no real dialogue regarding gun violence and the ease with which assault type weapons may be obtained.
In their announcement of the upcoming press conference last week there seemed to be the smallest hint of change, that maybe even they were horrified at the thought of twenty 6 and 7 year old's being slaughtered. They hyped the press conference endlessly to the media, practically begging for a huge turnout, almost implying that what Wayne LaPierre, the NRA CEO, would say would be a departure from his and the organizations defiance of the past.
Well, if you thought that you're the definition of a sucker. He blamed the Sandy Hook shooting and others on the media and violence in movies, TV and video games. Then came the kicker; he had a solution to the problem of mass school shootings and pledged the NRA would put their full efforts behind the idea. The NRA wants to stop school violence by putting an armed cop in every school in America. I won't go into all the possible bad scenarios that could result if this idea were implemented; I think you can imagine a few on your own.
What did you think he was going to say? That the NRA was now willing to sit down with community groups, school boards and legislators and try to come up with solutions to the problem? Sucker. The NRA exists for one reason only, to lobby for what is best for its' sponsors and benefactors, the gun manufacturers of America. What is best for those manufacturers is increased sales. Period. They don't care who dies or how many from gun violence. They only care about increasing gun sales. The NRA is their lobbying group whose job it is to create a climate and influence legislation that will ensure more gun sales.
As long as gun sales are brisk, dead children are collateral damage.

To be fair, if I ever going on a disgruntled mailman type spree, I'm blaming Monday Morning Quarterback.
They just don't get it. All they want is to consolidate their power.
Maybe all of us are not as civilized as we once thought we were
The NRA plan to guard schools is so stupid that 1/3rd of all public schools already use it.
[. . .] Nationwide, at least 23,000 schools — about one-third of all public schools — already had armed security on staff as of the most recent data, for the 2009-10 school year, and a number of states and districts that do not use them have begun discussing the idea in recent days. . .
Plus the NRA plan was much more comprehensive than just armed guards. Everything about school security needs to be revised and that’s what the NRA proposed, not simply “more guns” as the libs would have you believe.
CRS Report: Under 2% Of Gun Crimes Involve "Assault Weapons"
Barack Obama is the sole reason for the increased demand for firearms, ammunition, high capacity magazines and CCW permits since 2008. The sale of guns and high capacity magazines are extremely "brisk" since Obama won a second term.
