He said that shortly after becoming president at Hillsdale, he had received a letter from the Department of Education. According to him the letter said his college "violated standards for diversity because we didn't have enough dark ones. I guess, is what they meant."
As is usual in cases like this, a few hours later the college issued the standard non-apology apology. Students, alumni and staff were quick to jump to his defense. Maybe he is a good guy, maybe he just had a slip of the tongue. I just wonder how I would feel if I were a black student at Hillsdale? Does the president see me the same as other students, or am I one of the "dark ones"?
