|Takes it in the ass from A&E|
Phil Robertson, like the rest of us, is entitled to his opinion on anything and everything. He expressed his opinion on homosexuality. Was he arrested for expressing his opinion? Thrown in jail for expressing his opinion? No and no. He exercised his freedom of speech and wasn't punished in any way.
But isn't A&E suspending him tantamount to censorship and violation of his free speech rights? Hell no. I'm certain that somewhere in his contract with the network he promised not to do anything which would reflect poorly on his employer. He violated that contract with his comments. If he had simply said that he was brought up to believe homosexuality was wrong and left it at that, most likely this would have blown over. But he went on to link homosexuality to bestiality and made other disparaging remarks regarding homosexuals.
Nobody is surprised that a self admitted redneck is against homosexuality. But you can't embarrass your employer in such a public manner and expect to not suffer any consequences. None of our employers would put up with behavior which reflected poorly on the company and now Mr. Robertson knows his won't either.
