It's Not A Free Speech Issue

Takes it in the ass from A&E
So Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the Duck Dynasty money making empire, said some nasty things about homosexuals.  A&E, which broadcasts the show has suspended him indefinitely.  That action has sent the Facebook and Twitter universe into overdrive with all of the Tea Party Taliban bigots crying "freedom of speech" and playing the "war on Christians" card.

Phil Robertson, like the rest of us, is entitled to his opinion on anything and everything.  He expressed his opinion on homosexuality.  Was he arrested for expressing his opinion?  Thrown in jail for expressing his opinion?  No and no.  He exercised his freedom of speech and wasn't punished in any way.

But isn't A&E suspending him tantamount to censorship and violation of his free speech rights?  Hell no.  I'm certain that somewhere in his contract with the network he promised not to do anything which would reflect poorly on his employer.  He violated that contract with his comments.  If he had simply said that he was brought up to believe homosexuality was wrong and left it at that, most likely this would have blown over.  But he went on to link homosexuality to bestiality and made other disparaging remarks regarding homosexuals.

Nobody is surprised that a self admitted redneck is against homosexuality.  But you can't embarrass your employer in such a public manner and expect to not suffer any consequences.   None of our employers would put up with behavior which reflected poorly on the company and now Mr. Robertson knows his won't either.

His comment: We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other...

In other words, the world would be better off (for me) if everyone believed and behave as I do.

Typical.

You got that right.

Very well stated Grumpy. It's usually called the morals clause and there isn't a show biz contract or an advertising contract without it.

You ain't kidding. The people running to the constitution over this are even dumber than Robertson is. Will they stand behind me if I walk into Harlem and scream "I H8 N-words"? Well, they probably will but that isn't the point.

You're allowed to say whatever you want. But you don't have the freedom from consequences.

And add to that the new video's surfacing where he says even worse things. I think the Dynasty has just crumbled.

I didn't know about this show or who this individual was until he popped off and this broke out. He's wrong and he's out. Will the show go on with out the head honcho. I never watched it. I guess if they have a replacement , it will. If not, cancel the show.
